     Friends on the front porch
     watch orange sky blaze to red:
     speechless spectacle.


3rd Place: Dr. Rose Marie Stutts - Tuscaloosa, Alabama

      A gnarled pine -- lightning

      the mountain top is empty

      Dad, my best friend ... gone.

4th Place: Andrea Minear - Tuscaloosa, Alabama
       Giggles in the night
       talking til the early dawn
     
 secrets kept for life.

     We shed our layers
     to swim under a clear sky,
     blue reflecting blue.

     Young children wrestling
     joy teeming from their faces
     sun and flesh are one.

     Yeah, you make me smile.
     sometimes words just can't explain

     Spring sun,
     burning skin myriad secrets vanish
     into summer air.

     It's a warm spring day
     my best friend sits beside me
     drinking lemonade.

2nd Place: Mary Katherine Wesson - Northport, Alabama
     We are meant to be
    
the sun and sky together;
     friends on a journey.

3rd Place: Carter Standeffer - Tuscaloosa, Alabama
     We go to the park.
     We have fun and get a snack.
     The trees are swaying.

Grades 1 - 3

1st Place: Wimberly Debono - Birmingham, Alabama
     Running and playing
     Acting like we are horses
     we have lots of fun.

2nd Place: Gabriela Caviedes - Birmingham, Alabama
     Sweet as cherry pie
     Cherries dancing everywhere
     lovable are friends.

3rd Place: Janan Jaraysi - Birmingham, Alabama
     Friends are ice cream cones
     they're all different flavors
     delicious in thoughts.

4th Place: Ramsey Rossman - Birmingham, Alabama
     Why countries have wars
     They shouldn't have any more.

       Fishing for snow!
       I let my best friend take
      the bigger snow ball.                  (yukitsuri is a kids game using a fishing rod with a piece of charcoal at the end; they let snow stick to the charcoal as much as they can.).

      Our hills are full of cherry blossoms;
      I wish our Alabama friends were here.

     Hearing my friend's voice on the phone,      I lay under my blanket.

       Caught in a sudden shower
       we feel like there is no problem
       as we walk shoulder to shoulder.

     I think of the road,
     which I walk along with you in the
     spring afternoon,
     on our way back home from school.
